Study Plan Rules
Rules for building study plans that actually prepare someone for an exam: backward planning from the exam date, spacing and interleaving, active recall over rereading, realistic session sizing, weak-topic prioritization, and review cadence.

A study plan's job is to get the right material into durable long-term memory by the exam date, not to look thorough on paper — every rule below exists to fight the two default failure modes: running out of time because the plan front-loaded easy material, and forgetting material reviewed once weeks earlier because the plan never scheduled a second pass.
Plan backward from the exam date
- Start from the exam date and work backward, not forward from today — list every topic that must be covered, then allocate the fixed number of available days across them, rather than starting day one with no sense of whether the full list fits.
- Reserve the final block of time (roughly the last 10–15% of the schedule) explicitly for review and practice testing, not new material — treat that block as fixed and non-negotiable when building the rest of the plan.
- Build in slack (at least one buffer day per week) for the sessions that inevitably slip — a plan with zero slack collapses after the first missed day and demoralizes the person following it.
Spacing over massing
- Never schedule a topic for a single continuous block and consider it done — schedule an initial pass, then at least two spaced-out review passes before the exam (e.g. next day, then again after several days), since a fact reviewed once and never again is the one most likely to be forgotten by exam day.
- Space reviews with increasing gaps (a day, then a few days, then a week) rather than fixed daily repetition — fixed daily repetition of the same material wastes time on facts already secure while starving newer material of its own first pass.
- Interleave topics within a session (mix problem types or subjects) rather than blocking one topic for an entire session — interleaving is harder in the moment and produces measurably better long-term retention than blocked practice, even though it feels less productive while doing it.
Active recall over rereading
- Every study session should include an active-recall component (practice problems, self-quizzing, blank-page recall, teaching the material aloud) — rereading notes or the textbook a second time feels productive but produces weak retention compared to retrieval practice.
- When a plan includes "review chapter 4," make it concrete: replace it with "answer 15 practice questions from chapter 4" or "recreate chapter 4's key diagram from memory" — a vague review instruction gets executed as passive rereading by default.
- Treat the moment of struggling to recall something and failing as valuable, not wasted — that struggle is what strengthens the memory trace when the correct answer is then checked, more than smoothly rereading the answer would have.
Realistic session sizing
- Size sessions to 25–50 minute focused blocks with real breaks between them — a 3-hour unbroken "study block" on a plan is a session that will not be executed as planned; attention degrades well before that point.
- Budget time per topic based on actual difficulty and past performance, not equal slices — giving every topic the same number of hours ignores that some material takes the person three times as long to learn as others.
- Don't plan more daily study hours than the person has consistently sustained before — a plan calibrated to an idealized maximum-effort day fails on day three; calibrate to a sustainable pace across the full run-up to the exam.
Weak-topic prioritization
- Diagnose weak topics early (a diagnostic quiz or past-paper attempt in week one) rather than assuming — subjective confidence about which topics are weak is frequently wrong, and the plan should be built on evidence, not guesswork.
- Weight time allocation toward weak topics and toward topics worth more exam marks, in that order — a topic that's both weak and high-value gets first claim on study time; a topic that's already strong and low-value gets the least.
- Re-diagnose partway through the plan (a mid-point practice test) and reallocate remaining time based on what's still weak then, not on the original week-one diagnosis — weak topics shift as the plan progresses.
Review cadence and the final stretch
- Schedule a full practice test or past paper under timed conditions at least once before the final week, and treat its results as the primary signal for what the last stretch of the plan should prioritize.
- In the final few days, shift from learning new material to consolidation only: light review of a summary sheet or flashcards, more practice questions, no first-pass learning of untouched topics — cramming new material in the last 48 hours produces shallow, unstable memory that competes with and can degrade recall of material already learned.
- Protect sleep the night before the exam over an extra review session — sleep consolidates memory formed during the preceding study days, and a late cram session traded for sleep is a net loss on exam-day recall.
