Rules for the final stretch of exam preparation: past-paper practice under timed conditions, error logs, topic triage by marks-per-effort, the last-week taper, day-of routine, and what cramming can and cannot do.

Exam prep is a distinct phase from learning the material in the first place — its job is to convert already-learned knowledge into reliable, fast, exam-conditions performance, and the rules below are about closing that specific gap, not re-teaching content from scratch.

Past papers under timed conditions

  • Treat past/practice papers as the single highest-value prep activity available and prioritize them over rereading notes — they are the only activity that tests recall, timing, and question-format familiarity simultaneously, which is exactly what the actual exam demands.
  • Run at least one full past paper under strict timed, closed-book conditions (same time limit, no notes, no pausing) before the real exam — a paper done open-book or untimed measures something different from what the exam will require and gives a falsely comfortable signal.
  • Attempt past papers from multiple recent years/sittings if available, not just one — a single paper can be unrepresentative of the exam's actual range; the pattern across several is the useful signal.

Error logs

  • Keep a running log of every mistake made in practice: the question, what was answered, what the correct answer was, and why the error happened (misread the question, forgot the concept, ran out of time, careless arithmetic) — the "why" category is what makes the log actionable rather than just a record of wrongness.
  • Review the error log before each subsequent practice session, specifically checking whether previously logged error types recur — a mistake that repeats after being logged once signals a real gap that needs targeted review, not just more general practice.
  • Categorize errors by type (conceptual gap vs. careless/timing error) and address each category differently — a conceptual gap needs to go back to learning material; a careless/timing error needs slower, more deliberate practice under the same time pressure, not more content review.

Topic triage by marks-per-effort

  • Rank topics by expected marks value (how much of the exam they typically account for) against remaining effort required to get solid on them, and prioritize the highest marks-per-effort-remaining topics first — a topic worth 5% of the exam that would take a full extra day to master is a bad time investment relative to a topic worth 15% that needs only a light review.
  • Identify and deliberately deprioritize (not necessarily skip entirely) low-yield topics — rare edge cases, historically low-frequency question types, or content explicitly marked optional — once time is genuinely constrained; spending equal time on every topic regardless of exam weight is a common and costly default.
  • Reassess the triage ranking after each practice paper — if a topic keeps costing marks despite being ranked low-priority, its actual marks-per-effort has changed and the ranking should update accordingly.

The last-week taper

  • Stop learning new material in the final week (ideally final 3–4 days) and shift entirely to consolidation: reviewing summary sheets, redoing previously-missed practice questions, light spaced review of flashcards — new-material learning this late produces shallow encoding that doesn't reliably survive to exam day.
  • Reduce total study volume gradually across the last week rather than maintaining peak intensity until the night before — a taper protects the physical and mental sharpness needed on exam day itself, the same principle athletes use before a competition.
  • Do one final timed practice paper no later than 2–3 days before the exam, not the day before — leave enough runway after it to address whatever it reveals, and enough recovery time before the exam that the last major cognitive effort isn't hours before the real thing.

Day-of rules

  • Do not attempt to learn new content on exam day — use the morning only for light review of material already secure (a summary sheet, key formulas, previously-made flashcards), which builds confidence without the risk of encountering something unfamiliar right before the exam.
  • Arrive with logistics solved in advance (location, required materials, permitted items) so no cognitive bandwidth is spent on avoidable last-minute uncertainty right before the exam starts.
  • Read the full exam and instructions before answering anything, and allocate time per section based on its marks weight before diving into the first question — starting immediately on question one without a time plan is how exams run out of time on later high-value sections.

What cramming can and cannot do

  • Cramming (concentrated last-minute review) can refresh weak recall of material that was already learned reasonably well at some point — it reactivates existing memory traces and is genuinely useful for that narrow purpose.
  • Cramming cannot substitute for first-time learning of unfamiliar material, and cannot produce durable retention — anything crammed for the first time the night before is disproportionately likely to be forgotten within days, which matters for any exam that builds on the material later (finals after midterms, licensing exams with follow-on knowledge requirements).
  • If forced to choose under real time pressure, cramming light review of many topics beats deep-diving one unfamiliar topic — partial familiarity with everything scores better on most exam formats than mastery of one section and blanks on the rest.
